Judgment interest (court discretion)
Singapore courts may award interest on judgments for debt or damages at such rate as they think fit, for any part of the period between the cause of action and judgment. Post-judgment default rate is 5.33% per annum simple (Supreme Court Practice Directions 2021 PD 18, effective 1 Jan 2024).
Civil Law Act 1909 (2020 Rev Ed) s 12. In any proceedings tried in any court of record for the recovery of any debt or damages, the court may, if it thinks fit, order that there shall be included in the sum for which judgment is given interest at such rate as it thinks fit on the whole or any part of the debt or damages for the whole or any part of the period between the date when the cause of action arose and the date of the judgment.
Pre-judgment interest (court discretion)
Pre-judgment interest is at the court discretion; there is no statutorily prescribed pre-judgment rate. Courts commonly apply 5.33% per annum simple by analogy.
